The present article aims to comprehend how the gravediggers, during the cholera epidemic in Ceara in 1862, were represented under a gaze of distrustfulness, prejudice and condemnation, in a scenario of fear and widespread death, when the massive burial of bodies became an essential health issue. The epidemic reached the daily lives, affected local funeral practices, promoted the urgency in building cemeteries to shelter the thousands of dead afflicted with the disease and the hiring of gravediggers. Their performance became a target of apprehension of the authorities.
